Coimbra Restaurant

Coimbra has been serving Portuguese chicken on Selous Avenue for decades, and reviewers keep coming back to the same order: half a chicken, chips and the sauces. Before the menu arrives, the table gets complimentary bread with garlic and peri-peri sauce, and that starter wins people over. Stefan (February 2026) wrote that if “the welcoming bread and sauce doesn't make you fall in love instantly,” the main course will. Mai Juju (November 2025) was blunter about the garlic: “That garlic is to die for!!”

The chicken is the reason most people go. Brian (September 2025) counted “at least 40 years since my first meal here” and found the same peri-peri flavours and the same value. Steaks get praise too, including a T-bone Claudio (August 2023) called “exquisite”, while Leevingston (December 2023) liked the grilled chicken but did not recommend the fish.

The old house, shaded by trees, fills up quickly, so earlier reviewers advise booking. Service is quick, and diners mention waiters by name: Felix and Noah both get thanked. Coimbra opens Tuesday to Sunday, 12:00 to 22:00.
